steam deck strategy games
Well, hello there, young folks! Let me tell ya somethin’ about them…uh… Steam Deck thingy-ma-jigs and them strategy games. My grandson, he’s always fiddlin’ with that contraption. Says it’s got all sorts of games, even ones where ya gotta think a bit, not just shootin’ and jumpin’ around like a jackrabbit.
So, I asked him, “What’s all the fuss about these ‘strategy’ games?” He says it’s like plannin’ a big ol’ garden, but instead of tomatoes and corn, you’re growin’ armies and kingdoms and stuff. Sounds complicated, right? But he showed me a few, and even this old lady could kinda see the fun in it.
One game, he called it Kingdom Eighties. Said it don’t matter if you’re a fancy city slicker or a country bumpkin like me, anyone can play it. You build stuff and fight off monsters, kinda like protectin’ the chicken coop from the foxes, I reckon. Simple enough, even for my old brain.
Then there’s this other one, Into the Breach. My grandson says it’s fast and you gotta think quick. Like when the cow gets loose, you gotta figure out how to catch her before she wrecks the whole darn farm. This game is the same, only with giant robots fightin’ giant bugs. Crazy, huh?
Now, that Steam thingamajig, it’s got a whole bunch of these strategy games, thousands of ‘em, my grandson says. He told me, “Grandma, there are 34,185 Strategy games on Steam!” I nearly choked on my tea! That’s more games than chickens we got on this farm! He says you can do all sorts of things in these games: explore new places, fight tough enemies, and make big decisions. It’s like bein’ the boss of your own little world, without havin’ to muck out the stalls, thank goodness.

He showed me a bunch more, names I can’t even remember. Something about Crusader Kings, where you play as a king or queen, makin’ deals and marryin’ off your kids to keep your kingdom strong. Sounds like a soap opera to me, but with swords and crowns instead of gossip and fancy dresses. Then there was XCOM 2, where you fight aliens. That one looked a bit scary for my taste. And Civilization VI, where you build a whole darn civilization from scratch. Imagine that! Like buildin’ a whole town from nothin’ but dirt and dreams.
He even tried to tell me about some fancy-pants thing called “4X”. Said it stands for “explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate”. Sounds like somethin’ a lawyer would say, not a game. But it just means you go around, find new stuff, build up your stuff, use your stuff, and then knock down other people’s stuff. Pretty much like everythin’ in life, when you think about it. Like when we bought that extra land from Old Man Johnson, we explored it, then we expanded our farm, then we exploited the good soil, and then we… well, we didn’t exterminate nobody, but you get the idea.
They got games about tradin’ stuff in space, games about fightin’ wars in the desert, even games about football. My grandson says even those football games are kinda strategy games, you gotta plan your moves and outsmart the other team. I guess that’s true, even when I’m baking my bread, I got to know how much flour to put in, or it will be a disaster. Same with making a quilt, got to have a plan or it looks a mess.
So, there you have it. A whole bunch of gibberish about strategy games on that Steam Deck thing. To me, it all sounds a bit complicated, but my grandson sure seems to like it. And I guess, as long as it keeps him out of trouble and learnin’ somethin’ new, it can’t be all that bad. Just hope he doesn’t start thinkin’ he’s a real king and tryin’ to order me around. This old lady still runs this house!
Steam Deck games can be lots of fun, but you need to pick the ones you like. And remember to take a break once in a while, go outside, get some fresh air, and maybe even plant a real garden, not just a digital one. That’s what I always say.
