Sony’s Horizon Movie Gets Release-Window Update

As part of the ongoing Sony vs. Tencent lawsuit, a lot of information that was not intended to be made public is being made public, and now another morsel of news has emerged. Documents from the lawsuit reveal that PlayStation Productions boss Asad Qizilbash gave a sworn declaration stating that the upcoming Horizon live-action movie is aiming to release in 2027.

Qizilbash said in the testimony, filed on October 16, that there is already a “working script” for the film and that the team is “actively searching for a director,” according to The Game Post. No names were divulged as candidates to direct, however. What Qizilbash did say, though, is that the goal is to begin shooting the Horizon movie in 2026 and release it in 2027.

PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures previously worked together on the Tom Holland-starring Uncharted movie and Gran Turismo. PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures are both owned by Sony.

This came up as part of the lawsuit because it pertains to Horizon, which Sony said Tencent ripped off for its upcoming Light of Motiram game. Qizilbash said Horizon’s main character, Aloy, is a “key icon” for PlayStation and that she is essential “to the flywheel of franchise building.”

Horizon was originally lined up to get a live-action Netflix series, but last year it was reported that the project wasn’t moving forward due to workplace misconduct allegations surrounding The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman.

The Horizon movie is just one of many films or TV shows based on PlayStation’s franchises currently in the works. Others include a Helldivers movie, Ghost of Tsushima anime and film projects, a Days Gone movie, and a God of War TV show. There is also the hit TV show The Last of Us, based on the Naughty Dog game, which is coming back in 2027 for its third and potentially final season.

Another detail that has emerged from the Sony vs. Tencent lawsuit is that Tencent wanted to collaborate with Sony on The Last of Us and Horizon. Sony reportedly rejected Tencent’s proposal for a Horizon game, and Tencent went on to make what Sony called a “slavish clone” with Light of Motiram.
