root game review
Alright, let’s talk about this Root game, you know, the one with all them critters fightin’ and stuff. I heard folks callin’ it a “root game review” so I guess that’s what we’re doin’ here. Don’t expect no fancy words from me, I’m just gonna tell it like it is, plain and simple.
First off, this game ain’t easy peasy. Them youngsters might pick it up quicker, but for an old gal like me, it took a bit. They say it’s got “depth” and “variety,” which I guess means there’s a whole lot of stuff goin’ on. You got different critters doin’ different things, and it ain’t always clear what you gotta do to win. So yeah, steep learnin’ curve, like climbin’ a hill with a sack of potatoes on your back.
But, if you got a bunch of folks who like playin’ games and stickin’ with ’em, then maybe it’s worth it. You know, like them fellers who play cards every Sunday. If they gonna keep at it, then fine. But if they gonna play it once and then throw it in the closet, well, that’s a waste, ain’t it? Especially if it costs a pretty penny. I heard someone sayin’ somethin’ ’bout 200 dollars! Lord have mercy, that’s enough to buy a whole mess of chickens!
Now, some folks call it a “wargame,” but it ain’t like them serious war games with all them tanks and soldiers. This one’s got cute little animals, you know, like squirrels and birds and such. But they still fightin’, tryin’ to take over the forest. It’s kinda like watchin’ the chickens squabble over a piece of corn, only with more rules.
- The Critters: You got all sorts of critters. Some are sneaky, some are strong, and some are just plain tricky. You gotta figure out how to use your critters best, and how to stop the other critters from winnin’.
- The Fightin’: It ain’t just about who’s got the biggest stick. You gotta plan and strategize. Sometimes you gotta be sneaky, sometimes you gotta be bold. And sometimes you just gotta hope for a little bit of luck.
- The Winnin’: Every critter’s got their own way of winnin’. Some gotta get points, some gotta control the forest, and some just gotta cause a whole lotta trouble. It’s like tryin’ to herd cats, only the cats are armed.
They say it’s “asymmetric,” which I guess means everybody’s playin’ different. It ain’t like checkers where everybody’s got the same pieces. In this game, you gotta learn how to play YOUR critters, and you gotta learn how to play AGAINST the OTHER critters. It keeps you on your toes, that’s for sure.

And it’s “competitive,” which means everybody’s tryin’ to win. There ain’t no team work here, unless you make a deal with someone, which sometimes works and sometimes don’t, just like life, eh? It’s every critter for themselves. You gotta be cutthroat, you gotta be shrewd, and you gotta be willin’ to step on a few toes to get to the top.
The game looks nice, though. Them critters are all cute and colorful. It’s kinda like a storybook, but with more fightin’. I reckon the young’uns would like lookin’ at it, even if they don’t understand what’s goin’ on. And it’s well balanced I hear. Which mean’s ain’t nobody gettin’ too big of an advantage from the start. It all comes down to how good you play it.
I heard someone say it’s cheap because they use your driving data. Now, I don’t know nothin’ about that. Sounds like somethin’ them city folk would do. All I know is, if you gonna buy this game, make sure you gonna play it. Otherwise, you just wastin’ your money. And money don’t grow on trees, ya know? You gotta work hard for it.
So, is Root a good game? Well, it depends. If you like a challenge, if you like thinkin’, and if you got a group of folks who are willin’ to stick with it, then yeah, it’s probably a good game. But if you want somethin’ simple and easy, somethin’ you can just pick up and play, then maybe you should stick to checkers. Or go outside and get some fresh air. That’s what I always say. Fresh air and sunshine, that’s the best medicine.
Anyways, that’s my two cents on this root game. Take it or leave it. I’m just an old lady, what do I know? But I do know a thing or two about chickens, and this game reminds me a bit of ’em. Always squabblin’, always tryin’ to get ahead. Just like life, I guess.
