hunger games book review

Alright, let me tell ya ’bout this book, “Hunger Games.” Now, I ain’t no fancy book reader or nothin’, but this one, it got me hooked good. It’s about this girl, Katniss, tough as nails she is, and she’s gotta fight.

See, where she lives, it’s called Panem, and it ain’t pretty. This place, the Capitol, they run everything, and they’re mean as snakes. They split the land up into 12 districts, and District 12, well, that’s where Katniss is stuck. It’s poor, real poor. Folks there scratchin’ a livin’ just to get by.

So, what’s the deal with these Hunger Games? Well, it’s like this terrible TV show, only it ain’t no show, it’s real life and death. Every year, the Capitol picks one boy and one girl from each district, and they gotta fight to the death in this big arena. Sick, ain’t it? They call it “tribute”, I call it murder.

  • They gotta fight with whatever they can find, knives, bows and arrows, whatever.
  • And the Capitol folks, they watchin’ it all, laughin’ and cheerin’ like it’s some kind of sport. Breaks your heart, it does.
  • Katniss, she gets picked, and she’s gotta go. She ain’t happy about it, but she’s tough, like I said.

This Peeta fella, he gets picked too, from the same district. Now, I ain’t gonna spoil it for ya, but them two, they go through a lot together. They gotta be smart, they gotta be strong, and they gotta watch their backs, ’cause nobody’s your friend in them games.

The book, it really makes you think, you know? About how some folks got all the power and how they treat the ones who ain’t got nothin’. Makes you wanna stand up and fight, even if you’re just a little old lady like me…well, not like me me, but you know what I mean.

It’s set in the future, they say, after some big war tore everything up. But honestly, it feels like it could be happening right now, the way some folks act. Always wantin’ more, always pushin’ other people around.

Now, this Suzanne Collins, she wrote the book. She must be a smart cookie, ’cause she sure knows how to tell a story. She makes you feel like you’re right there with Katniss, runnin’ through the woods, tryin’ to stay alive. I even stayed up late readin’ it, and that ain’t somethin’ I do often these days.

And the writin’, it’s good too. Not all fancy with big words and stuff, just plain talk that gets right to the point. That’s what I like. Don’t need no fancy words to tell a good story, just gotta tell it like it is.

This ain’t just some kids’ book, mind you. It’s got stuff in there that makes you think. About fightin’ for what’s right, about takin’ care of the people you love, and about not lettin’ the bad guys win.

So, if you’re lookin’ for a good book to read, give this “Hunger Games” a try. It’ll make you mad, it’ll make you sad, but it’ll also make you think. And that’s what a good book should do, right? Make you think about stuff and maybe even make you wanna change the world a little bit.

It’s what they call “dystopian”, which just means things are bad and folks are gettin’ pushed around. And “sci-fi” too, ‘cause they got some fancy gadgets and stuff. But don’t let them fancy words fool ya, it’s just a story about people tryin’ to survive in a tough world.

This Katniss girl, she has to represent her district, Number 12 in this game, it’s like the seventy-forth time they doin’ this sick game. And the heart of this whole mess, this Panem, they call it the Capitol. That’s where the meanest ones stay, watchin’ poor people suffer.

They say it’s a young adult book, but I reckon anyone can read it and get somethin’ out of it. Young or old, it don’t matter. We all gotta fight our own battles, one way or another.

It’s the first in a series, so there’s more to the story if you want it. I ain’t read them yet, but I reckon I will. Gotta see what happens to Katniss and Peeta, gotta see if they can finally make things better.
