hunger games 2023 review
Well now, if you’re lookin’ for a good ol’ story about survival, struggle, and the ugliness of power, then let me tell ya, this “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” sure hits a lot of them buttons. It ain’t exactly the same as the other ones we seen before, but it’s still got plenty of the action, heartache, and bad folks doin’ bad things. So let me break it down for ya, real simple-like.
Now, this here movie ain’t about Katniss Everdeen like the others. No, no. This one goes back a bit, to when the Hunger Games was still young, just the 10th round, if you will. The story focuses on a young Coriolanus Snow, that feller who becomes the big bad president later on. Now, he ain’t the old, nasty man we know from the first series. Nope, he’s just a young buck tryin’ to get ahead in a world that ain’t lookin’ too kindly on him.
Coriolanus, played by Tom Blyth, he ain’t got much goin’ for him at first. His family’s fallin’ apart, they ain’t got no money, and they’re a long ways from the fancy folks in Capitol. He gets chosen to mentor one of them tributes in the Hunger Games, and that’s where his story really starts to take shape. Now, he ain’t too happy about it at first, but as things go on, he starts to make some real decisions about where his loyalties lie. I won’t spoil too much, but let me tell ya, it’s a real trip watchin’ him turn into the man we all know later on.
Now, his tribute, Lucy Gray Baird, played by Rachel Zegler, well, she’s somethin’ else. She’s a wild card, always singin’ and performin’ for the cameras, tryin’ to stand out in a game where ya gotta do whatever it takes to survive. She’s got a charm about her, but I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too sure ’bout her performance at first. See, there’s somethin’ about her accent and her over-the-top ways that just didn’t sit right with me. She ain’t no Katniss, that’s for sure, and sometimes it feels like they’re tryin’ too hard to make her fit that mold. But despite that, she’s still got some real moments in the film that shine.
The film does a mighty fine job buildin’ up the world, too. You get to see more of the Capitol, what it was like before it became all slick and fancy, and there’s a lotta stuff that shows you just how cruel and twisted the Games really are. It’s like watchin’ a slow train wreck—you know it’s bad, but you can’t look away.

One thing I gotta mention though is the music. Now, I know, some folks might say it’s important for the mood, but good grief, there’s just too much singin’. Every time you turn around, Lucy’s belting out a song, and after a while, it just gets a bit much. It ain’t the kinda thing you wanna hear every five minutes when you’re already sittin’ on the edge of your seat watchin’ folks fight for their lives. It feels a bit forced at times, like they’re tryin’ to make us remember how good Katniss was with her bow and arrow. But I suppose it gives the movie its own little twist.
But don’t let that stop ya, cause even with all the singin’ and some of them rough patches, this here film’s still worth watchin’. It’s got some real good visual effects, and the actors, especially Tom Blyth, they do a fine job bringin’ these characters to life. Coriolanus Snow, he’s a lot more complicated than you might think, and it’s interestin’ to see how he ends up goin’ down the path he does.
If you’re a fan of the franchise, you might find this prequel to be a breath of fresh air, even if it ain’t perfect. It’s got its flaws, but I reckon it does a good job tellin’ a new story while still remindin’ us of the dark, cruel world of the Hunger Games. It’s a real story about power, survival, and what folks will do when they ain’t got much left to lose.
In the end, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” might just surprise ya. It ain’t got all the glitz and glam of the original series, but it does what it sets out to do: it gives ya a look at how things started, and how one young feller could end up changin’ the whole dang system. It’s worth watchin’, especially if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ a bit different but still familiar in the same breath.
