harry potter lego game reviews

Okay, so I’ve been meaning to dive into the LEGO Harry Potter games for ages, and I finally took the plunge! I grabbed both LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 because, well, you gotta have the whole story, right?

First, I fired up Years 1-4. I have to say, going in, I was a little worried it might be too childish, even for a LEGO game. Boy, was I wrong! The game immediately sucked me in with that signature LEGO humor. They take the familiar scenes from the movies and add this silly, slapstick twist that just works. I mean, seeing a LEGO Dumbledore do something goofy is always a win.

I spent a good chunk of time just exploring Hogwarts. It’s surprisingly detailed! I wandered around, smashing things (gotta get those studs!), finding hidden characters, and unlocking secrets. I played through the main story, reliving iconic moments like the troll in the bathroom (which was hilarious in LEGO form), the Quidditch matches, and, of course, facing off against Voldemort… or, you know, a brick version of him.

The spell-casting was pretty intuitive. I learned new spells as I progressed, each with its own unique uses. It was fun figuring out which spell to use in different situations – Wingardium Leviosa for lifting objects, Reducto for blasting things, and so on. There were some moments when figuring how to progress was slightly confusing but I figured it out with a lot of determination!

After I wrapped up Years 1-4, I jumped straight into Years 5-7. I noticed the gameplay was pretty similar, which was great because I didn’t have to learn a whole new system. But the story, obviously, got darker, just like the movies. The environments reflected this too, with a more somber feel at times.

I battled Death Eaters, explored the Ministry of Magic (which was super cool), and even participated in Dumbledore’s Army training. The puzzles seemed a little more challenging in this one, which I appreciated. And, the final showdown with Voldemort? Epic, even in LEGO form. It got tough at parts here too!

What I Loved

  • The Humor: The LEGO games always nail the humor, and these were no exception.
  • The Exploration: Hogwarts and other locations were surprisingly detailed and fun to explore.
  • The Gameplay: Simple, but engaging. The spell-casting was fun, and the puzzles were just challenging enough.
  • The Nostalgia: Reliving the Harry Potter story in this way was a blast.

What Could Have Been Better

  • Camera Angles: Sometimes the camera got a little wonky, making it hard to see what I was doing.
  • Glitches: I had a couple of freezing glitches that required restarting.

Overall, I had a fantastic time with both LEGO Harry Potter games. They’re perfect for anyone who loves Harry Potter, LEGO games, or just a fun, lighthearted adventure. I’d definitely recommend giving them a try!
