game dev tycoon computer hardware old
Okay, so I’ve been messing around with Game Dev Tycoon again lately, specifically trying to get some of those old-school computers working right. It’s a bit of a pain, but I figured I’d share what I did in case anyone else is struggling.
First, I fired up the game and started a new game. I’m no stranger to this game, I’ve played it tons of times. But this time my goal was very particular.
Gettin’ Started
I made sure to begin in the early years, the garage phase, where all the classic hardware is available. If you start too late, you miss out on the stuff I wanted to mess with.
The Old Hardware Shuffle
- I picked the starting platform, the good old “Tes”. Seemed like a safe bet to start playing around.
- Then I started to make games, simple ones at first. You know, to just get some money rolling in. It’s always tempting to get fancy right away, don’t!
- I kept my eye on the hardware options as I progressed. The “Tes” isn’t exactly top of the line, but it’s necessary for some of the early achievements and, frankly, it’s just nostalgic.
Keep It Old School
The trick, I found, is to resist the urge to upgrade too quickly. I mean, it’s super tempting to jump to the newer, faster computers as soon as they’re available. But if you want to really explore those old hardware options, you gotta hold back. It is the only way to make things work!
My First Old Machine
My first major “old” computer was the “Gr64”. I developed a few games on it, making sure to match the genres and topics to what worked well for that platform. It’s not all that different from playing normally, really, just with a bit more… patience, maybe? I was so exciting!

Success! (Sort Of)
I managed to get a few games out on the older hardware, and even got a couple of decent reviews! It’s not going to win any Game of the Year awards, but that wasn’t the point. I wanted to see if I could still make it work, and I did!
So, yeah, that’s pretty much it. Just a little experiment with the older computers in Game Dev Tycoon. Nothing groundbreaking, but fun if you’re into that retro vibe. Give it a shot, tell me how is everything going!
