game dev story no hardware engineer
Okay, so I was messing around with Game Dev Story, trying to figure out how to get a really good game going. I kept hitting this wall where my team just wasn’t cutting it. Specifically, I was always missing a Hardware Engineer. I tried everything, or so I thought!
The Struggle is Real
I started a new game, like I always do. Picked my company name, hired a few folks. You know, the usual. Got some contracts to build up some cash, and started training my team. I boosted their levels, switched their jobs around, trying to get that golden combination. But no matter what I did, I couldn’t get anyone to become a Hardware Engineer. It was driving me nuts!
I kept hiring new people, hoping one of them would have the right skills. Nope. Bunch of Coders, Writers, Sound Engineers… plenty of those. But that darn Hardware Engineer? Nowhere to be seen. I was starting to think it was impossible, some kind of cruel joke the game was playing on me.
The “Aha!” Moment (Finally!)
Then, after like, the tenth game restart (don’t judge!), I did something different. I’m not even sure why. Instead of focusing on training everyone equally, I focused on getting one guy. My starting Coder for instance, maxed out to at least Level 5. I spent a ton of money, and all the research data I’d been saving.
- First, I got him up to Level 5 Coder.
- Then, I changed his job to Sound Engineer and got him to Level 5.
- Then, I changed his job to Director and got him to Level 5.
- Finally I changed his job to Hardware Engineer. BOOM.
There’s some method to job changes, you can’t just pick whatever you want. But I was so happy to find out it was possible and it wasn’t some glitch!
So, there you have it. It’s not about hiring the right person, it’s about making the right person. Feels kind of obvious now, but trust me, it took me way too long to figure that out! Now I’m finally on my way to making some seriously awesome games (and consoles!). Game on!
