everdell board game review
Alright, let’s talk about this Everdell board game. My grandkids got it, and we’ve been playin’ it a bunch. First off, it’s got all these cute little critters and a pretty forest, you know, like somethin’ out of a fairy tale. It’s real nice to look at, that’s for sure. Even this old lady can appreciate the purty pictures.
Now, the game itself, it’s a bit…busy. You gotta collect stuff, build stuff, send your little workers all over the place. It’s like runnin’ a whole farm, but with squirrels and hedgehogs instead of chickens and cows. You gotta think ahead, plan your moves, or else you’ll end up with nothin’ done and winter comin’ on fast. Winter ain’t good in this game, just like real life. Everything shuts down, and you gotta hope you got enough food stored up.
We played it with just two people, me and my grandson. It was alright, kept us busy for a good while. Then we played it with more folks, and it got kinda crowded, you know? Everybody’s reachin’ for the same stuff, snatchin’ up the best cards. It’s like a feeding frenzy at the pig trough, gotta be quick! But that’s half the fun, I guess. Gotta be faster than them youngsters if you wanna win.
- Lots of stuff to do: You got your workers, your resources, your buildings. It can get a little confusin’ at first, but you get the hang of it. It’s like learnin’ to bake a cake – gotta follow the recipe, but you can add your own little twists.
- Purty pictures: I ain’t gonna lie, the game is real pretty. All them little animals and trees and whatnot, it’s a sight to see. Makes you feel like you’re right there in the woods, gatherin’ berries and buildin’ a cozy home.
- Keeps you thinkin’: This ain’t no mindless game, let me tell you. You gotta plan ahead, think about what your opponents are doin’, and make sure you ain’t wastin’ your time. It’s like plannin’ a harvest, gotta do it right or you’ll be hungry all winter.
They got these expansions too, more cards and critters and stuff. We ain’t tried ’em all yet, but the ones we did, they just made the game…more. More things to do, more things to think about. Sometimes it felt like too much, you know? Like tryin’ to stuff too many potatoes in a sack, it’s bound to burst. But if you like a game with lots of options, then you’ll probably like the expansions. Just be prepared to spend a whole afternoon playin’.
One thing I didn’t like was all them tiny little pieces. My old eyes ain’t what they used to be, and I kept droppin’ ’em and losin’ ’em under the table. My grandson had to get down on his hands and knees more times than I care to count. They should make them pieces bigger, I say. For us folks who ain’t got eagle eyes anymore.

Overall, though, Everdell’s a good game. It ain’t no checkers or nothin’, but it keeps you entertained. It’s a good way to spend time with the grandkids, teach ‘em a thing or two about plannin’ and workin’ hard. And that’s what matters, ain’t it? Spendin’ time together and havin’ a little fun.
It ain’t perfect, mind you. It can be a bit complicated, and them tiny pieces are a pain. But it’s purty, it’s challengin’, and it’s got squirrels. What more could an old lady ask for? If you’re lookin’ for a game that’ll keep you busy for a while, then give Everdell a try. Just make sure you got your glasses on and a good cup of coffee handy.
So, that’s my take on Everdell. It ain’t fancy, but it’s fun. And that’s good enough for me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go find that little wooden berry token I dropped under the couch. Darn things are always gettin’ away from me.
