My grandson, he set up this computer thing for me. Said I could play them games on it. I don’t know nothin’ ’bout these things. But them games, they sure are somethin’. They look real pretty, like them cartoons, but sometimes they go real slow. I asked my grandson, he said it might be the computer not being good enough. So, do flash browser games need good hardware?

That boy, he’s always talkin’ ’bout “hardware” this and “software” that. I just nod my head like I understand. He says the hardware is like the guts of the computer. The better the guts, the faster them games go. Or somethin’ like that. He mentioned somethin’ called a “CPU,” said it’s like the brain. And some other thing called a “GPU,” which is like, I don’t know, the muscles maybe? Makes the pictures move good, he says.

Need good brain for games, they say

So these flash games, they need a good brain, this CPU thing. My grandson, he said some have two brains, some have four. More brains, more better, I guess. Just like them cows back on the farm. The ones with two stomachs ate more, gave more milk. Maybe it’s like that. More brains in the computer, more games it can play.

These flash games, he says they use somethin’ called “Flash Player.” Sounds like some kinda superhero to me. But he also says this Flash thing, it ain’t no good anymore. Some people are sayin’ it’s old. Too many bad guys trying to mess with it. They call it security something. I don’t know. Back in my day, security was just a good strong lock on the door.

Pictures need good muscles, too

And then there’s that other thing, the GPU. My grandson says it makes the pictures move real smooth. Like when you’re watchin’ them birds fly. Smooth as butter. He says some of them picture things are better than others. Like, one is called “Nvidia,” and the other is “AMD.” He says Nvidia is better at them 2D things. Whatever that means.

Seems like these games, even the simple ones, they need a lot of brain power. They get tired after a while, start movin’ slow. He says it’s up to the people who make them games to make ’em better. Optimize, he calls it. Like when we used to optimize the feed for the chickens so they’d lay more eggs.

I remember one time, we had this old tractor. Thing was always breakin’ down. Took forever to plow the field. Then we got a new one, a fancy one with all them gears and levers. Worked like a charm. Maybe it’s like that with these computers. The old ones, they just can’t keep up with them new-fangled games.

New things always better, I guess

My grandson, he’s always talkin’ ’bout gettin’ a new computer. Says the one I got is too old. Can’t handle them new games. Says it needs an upgrade. Like when we used to upgrade the barn, addin’ on a new section for the cows. More space, more cows. More power, more games, I guess.

But I tell him, this old computer, it still works. It’s like my old bones. They might ache a little, but they still get me around. And these games, they still play, even if they’re a little slow sometimes.

I reckon you can’t expect an old horse to run like a young colt. Same with these computers, I suppose. But even an old horse can still pull a cart, and even an old computer can still play some games. I think flash browser games need good hardware, this is true.

Don’t need the fanciest thing, though

You don’t need the fanciest, newest thing to have a little fun. Just like you don’t need a golden egg to make a good omelet. A regular egg will do just fine.

So, if you’re thinkin’ ’bout playin’ them flash games, and your computer’s a little old, don’t you worry too much. It might be a little slow sometimes, but you can still have some fun. Just like me. I might be a little slow these days, but I still got a lot of life left in me. And I still enjoy them little games, even if they take their sweet time loadin’.

It is a tricky subject, these browser games, not simple. But I think I understand a bit better now.
