Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Jet Makes His Magic: The Gathering Debut In Four New Cards
Earlier this week, Magic: the Gathering fans were treated to a deep dive into the trading card game’s next set, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Based on the critically-acclaimed Nickelodeon series, the upcoming set chronicles Aang’s journey from a young boy trapped in an iceberg to the all-powerful Avatar, master of all four elements and the world’s primary peacekeeper. It’s a daunting task for our young monk, but thankfully he finds many allies who are eager to join his cause throughout his adventures.
One of these allies–misguided as he might be–is Jet, leader of the Freedom Fighters. And while the tragic vigilante might have been missing during this week’s reveal, GameSpot can offer an exclusive look at four cards centered around Jet and his gang of revolutionaries.
The first of these cards is the Legendary Creature – Human Rebel Ally Jet, Freedom Fighter. When Jet enters, he deals damage equal to the number of creatures you control to target creature an opponent controls. When Jet dies, you get place a +1/+1 on each of up to two target creatures. With a converted mana cost (CMC) of five, Jet isn’t particularly cheap to get out–though the ridiculously powerful Sozin’s Comet could definitely make it a bit easier. Keeping in line with his more ambush-oriented battle tactics, Jet, Freedom Fighter is a red-white card that is handy when making a quick-yet-powerful play.
Next up is Jet’s Brainwashing. With a CMC of one and the ability to render a target creature unable to block during the current turn, this Sorcery is cheap and simple to play. However, it also has a kick cost of three, meaning you can chose to pay a bit more when playing it. If you do, you’ll get the opportunity to take control of the target creature until the end of the turn. After taking control of it, the target creature is untapped and gains haste until the end of turn. Lastly, Jet’s Brainwashing creates a Clue token, a returning artifact that can be sacrificed in order to draw a card.

Price of Freedom is a Lesson, a Sorcery spell subtype introduced back in Strixhaven: School of Mages that is making a big return in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Once played, Price of Freedom allows the user to destroy target artifact or land an opponent controls. Its controller may search their library for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle. After this is resolved, the user must then draw a card. With a CMC of two, Price of Freedom packs a lot of punch at a fairly low cost.
Last up is Treetop Freedom Fighters, a Creature – Human Rebel Ally with a CMC of three. Though only a 2/1, Treetop Freedom Fighters’ low cost, Haste ability, and ability to create a 1/1 Ally creature token upon entering makes it an extremely viable early-game card.

Overall, I’m a big fan of how strong (and flavorful) these cards are. Though Jet might be vehemently against the Fire Nation and all it stands for, it seems very intentional that his tactics and rage make him both philosophically and mechanically very similar to the people he despises. It’s a sad irony that he and his associated cards work extremely well alongside many of the Fire Benders we’ve seen, and makes me even more excited to see how this set’s cards might poignantly reflect Avatar: The Last Airbender’s themes and narrative.
Magic: the Gathering’s Avatar: The Last Airbender collaboration is set to release on November 21, though eager players can preorder boosters and beginner boxes now.
