One Battle After Another 4K Blu-Ray Preorders Are Live

One Battle After Another is already available to preorder on 4K Blu-ray at Walmart ahead of its worldwide theatrical premiere this Friday. Walmart was briefly taking preorders on a Limited Edition Steelbook, but it’s either sold out or Walmart decided to turn off the ability to preorder since the movie technically probably wasn’t supposed to be available to order until tomorrow. In any case, the Limited Edition Steelbook was initially priced at $44.25, while the standard edition 4K Blu-ray is $37 (and still available).

Amazon has yet to open preorders, but we’ll update this story once the Limited Edition Steelbook is available to purchase from Amazon.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson with Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Chase Infiniti, and Teyana Taylor starring, One Battle After Another looks to be an early contender for major awards next year. An action thriller spliced with dark comedy, the 162-minute film currently sits at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes’ critic meter. DiCaprio leads the way as a former revolutionary who is now perpetually paranoid due to rampant substance use. Bob Ferguson/Pat Calhoun (DiCaprio’s character) must rescue his daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti) from Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, his mortal enemy played by Sean Penn.

One Battle After Another is inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland. The basic premise and some plot points are adapted from the book, but One Battle After Another isn’t a conventional adaptation. Anderson previously adapted Pynchon’s 2009 novel Inherent Vice. The 2014 movie is considered to be “based on” rather than “inspired by,” as it’s more faithful in its approach. Unfortunately, Inherent Vice is only available on Blu-ray, not 4K Blu-ray, but at least it’s super cheap. Pynchon, one of America’s greatest living novelists, is famously reclusive, so it’s doubtful we’ll learn how he feels about One Battle After Another.

Speaking of Pynchon, though, what a great time for fans of the former Simpsons voice actor. Not only do Pynchon fans have a new Paul Thomas Anderson romp inspired by Vineland to watch, a new novel from legendary author is almost here. Shadow Ticket, Pynchon’s first novel since 2013’s Bleeding Edge–probably the most “adaptable” Pynchon novel left–will be published October 7.

Below, we’ve listed Paul Thomas Anderson’s films on Blu-ray and 4K (when possible). If you want to read the source material for One Battle After Another and Inherent Vice, check out the next list of Pynchon novels. Both lists are organized in chronological order.

One Battle After Another is Anderson’s 10th feature film, all of which he has written and directed. With the exception of his directorial debut Hard Eight, Anderson has produced all of his movies, too. One Battle After Another is only the third Anderson film to get a 4K Blu-ray release. Phantom Thread, the second Anderson film starring Daniel Day-Lewis, released on 4K in 2018. The Adam Sandler movie Punch-Drunk Love–one of Sandler’s best performances–released on 4K earlier this year as part of The Criterion Collection.
