dixit game review
Okay, so I’ve been hearing about this game, Dixit, for a while now. It always sounded kinda cool, but I wasn’t sure if it was really my thing. But my friend, Sarah, she’s a huge board game fanatic, she finally convinced me to give it a try last weekend. We got together with a few other friends, ordered some pizza, and dove in.
First off, let me just say, the artwork on the cards is absolutely gorgeous. I mean, seriously, each card is like a tiny little piece of art. They’re all dreamy and surreal, it’s kinda hard to describe. You could honestly just spend hours looking at them, they are really great. Anyway, the game itself is pretty simple to learn, which is always a plus in my book. Basically, each player gets a hand of these picture cards.
How We Played
- Then, one person is the “storyteller” for the round. They pick a card from their hand and give a clue about it. The clue can be anything – a word, a phrase, a song, even a sound effect!
- Everyone else then picks a card from their own hand that they think matches the clue.
- All the chosen cards get shuffled together, and then everyone has to guess which card was the original one that the storyteller picked.
You get points for guessing correctly, and also for other players guessing your card. There is a lot of detail to score, but the basic rule is just guessing correctly. It sounds a bit confusing when you write it out, but it’s actually super easy to pick up once you start playing. We played for a few hours, and I gotta say, I was hooked! It’s not like any other game I’ve played. You really have to think creatively, but at the same time, you have to try to get into the other players’ heads.
There were so many moments where we were all just cracking up, trying to figure out what the storyteller was thinking. One time, Sarah gave the clue “childhood memory,” and the cards that came up were all over the place. It was hilarious! And the discussions afterward, trying to explain why we picked the cards we did, were just as fun as the game itself. We tried so hard to explain our thoughts to each other.
Honestly, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Dixit. I went in a little skeptical, but I came out a total convert. I even went out and bought my own copy of the game the next day! It’s definitely a game that I’ll be playing again and again. It’s perfect for a casual game night with friends, and it’s a great way to spark some really interesting and fun conversations. If you’re looking for something a little different, something that’s both creative and social, I highly recommend giving Dixit a try. You won’t regret it!
