dixit board game review
Alright, so last weekend, I got together with a few friends for a game night, and we decided to try out Dixit. I’d heard good things about it, but had never played it before. Let me tell you, it was a blast!
First off, setting up the game was a breeze. We just put the board in the middle of the table, shuffled those big, beautiful cards, and dealt six to each of us. Everyone grabbed a rabbit meeple – they’re super cute, by the way – and placed it on the starting space. We were ready to go in like, five minutes flat.
The basic idea of Dixit is pretty simple. Each round, one person is the “storyteller.” They pick a card from their hand and give a clue about it – it could be a word, a phrase, a sound, even a song lyric. The only rule is, it can’t be too obvious or too obscure. The other players then choose a card from their own hands that they think best matches the clue.
We started playing, and oh boy, did we get into it. For the first card, I think Sarah was the storyteller. She looked at her card, thought for a second, and said, “Lost.” We all stared at our hands, trying to find something that fit that word. It’s trickier than it sounds! You’ve got these cards with all sorts of surreal, dreamlike images on them, and you’re trying to figure out what the storyteller was thinking.
We each threw in a card, face down, and Sarah shuffled them all up, including her own. Then, she laid them out, face up. Now came the fun part – guessing which card was the storyteller’s. This is where the real strategy comes in. You don’t want everyone to guess your card, because then you don’t get any points. But you also don’t want nobody to guess it, because then, again, no points! It’s this delicate balance of being just vague enough, but not too vague.

- We made our guesses, placing our little voting tokens on the cards.
- Then, Sarah revealed which card was hers.
- There were points all around!
We played for a couple of hours, just laughing and trying to outsmart each other. Some of the clues were hilarious, some were really clever, and some were just plain weird. There was this one round where the clue was “Freedom,” and one of the cards had a bird flying out of a cage, which seemed super obvious. But guess what? It wasn’t the storyteller’s card! It turned out to be a total red herring.
I messed up my guesses quite a few times, but that’s the beauty of the game. It’s not about being right or wrong, it’s about the creativity and the shared experience of interpreting these wild images together. Everyone was engaged the whole time, trying to decipher the clues and pick the perfect card from their hand.
The end result?
A great time was had by all. My friend, John won, but honestly, it didn’t even matter. We were all just having too much fun to care about who was winning. Dixit is definitely going into the regular game night rotation. It’s easy to learn, it’s fun for everyone, and it’s a great way to spark some creativity and conversation. Plus, those cards are just so darn pretty to look at! If you’re looking for a new game to try, I highly recommend giving Dixit a shot. You won’t regret it!
