arkham horror game review
So, I’ve been hearing a lot about this Arkham Horror game lately, and it’s been on my radar for a while. I finally decided to give it a go, and boy, was it a ride! Let me tell you all about it.
First off, I got the game and unboxed it. The components are something else. Tons of cards, tokens, and these cool investigator standees. I spent a good chunk of time just sorting everything out and getting familiar with what’s what. It felt like I was preparing for some big expedition, which, in a way, I guess I was.
Next up, I dove into the rulebook. Now, I’ve played my fair share of board games, but this one’s got some meat on its bones. It took a couple of read-throughs and some head-scratching to get a handle on the rules. There’s a lot going on with the different phases of each round, the skill tests, and all the different card types.
Once I felt like I had a decent grasp of the rules, I picked an investigator—Roland Banks, the Fed. Seemed like a good all-arounder for a first-timer like me. Then I set up the game board, laid out the locations, shuffled the decks, and got ready to delve into the mysteries of Arkham.
I started playing, and let me tell you, the atmosphere of this game is thick. You really feel like you’re in this creepy, early 20th-century town, trying to uncover some dark secrets. I moved Roland around the different locations, gathered clues, and encountered some pretty strange events. There were times when I drew cards that just threw a wrench in my plans, making me rethink my strategy on the fly.

Combat in this game is a real nail-biter. You’re never quite sure if you’re going to succeed, and the consequences of failure can be pretty harsh. I had a few close calls with some nasty monsters, barely scraping by. It’s a constant push and pull between trying to progress the investigation and just trying to survive.
My First Try
- Started with Roland Banks, feeling confident.
- Explored the streets of Arkham, picking up clues.
- Fought some creepy creatures, barely making it out alive.
- Got overwhelmed by the Mythos deck, things went south real fast.
- Ended up defeated, but not discouraged.
After a few hours, I finally succumbed to the horrors of Arkham. The game’s tough, no doubt about it. But even in defeat, I had a blast. It’s one of those games that sticks with you, and you can’t wait to try again, maybe with a different investigator or strategy.
In the end, I didn’t “win,” but I definitely got my money’s worth in terms of experience. It’s a game that challenges you, scares you, and keeps you coming back for more. I’m already planning my next game night to tackle the mysteries of Arkham again. This time, I’m bringing friends!
