documenting video game hardware
Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get into documenting video game hardware for a while now. It’s a growing thing, and I figured, why not jump in? Plus, I have all these old consoles just sitting around, gathering dust. Let’s do something useful with them, right?
Getting Started
First, I gathered all my old stuff. I’m talking Atari, Nintendo, Sega, even that old Vectrex my uncle gave me. Man, that thing is ancient! I laid everything out on a big table, so I could see what I was working with. It was like a trip down memory lane, finding all these old games and controllers.
Documenting
Then came the real work. I started with the basics, writing down the name of each console, the manufacturer, and the year it was released. Easy enough. Then, I dug a little deeper, finding out about the different models and variations of each console. Did you know there were like five different versions of the original PlayStation? Crazy, right?
- Took pictures, lots of pictures. Front, back, sides, even the inside after I opened them up. Got to show all those details!
- Noted the condition of each console, whether it still worked, if anything was missing or broken. You know, for a realistic view of what it is actually like.
- Looked up prices online to see what these things are worth nowadays. Some of them are surprisingly valuable! It is really surprising to know how much they worth.
Sharing
After that, I put everything into a spreadsheet. Organized, you know? Then, I started writing descriptions for each console, sharing my own memories and experiences with them. Kind of like a personal touch. Finally, I took all those pictures and notes and made a simple website to showcase everything. I mean, why keep all this to myself, right? It’s way more fun to share it with the world. Also, I think other people will find it valuable. You may be able to find someone that shares the same memory with you.
It’s been a fun project, and I’m not even close to being done. There’s so much more to explore, like the history of the companies that made these consoles, the evolution of game design, and the impact these games had on our culture. It is just so fascinating. It’s like being a digital archaeologist, digging up the past one byte at a time.

If you have any old consoles or games lying around, why not give it a try? It’s a great way to preserve a piece of history and share your passion with others. It’s super fun.
