freeware turn based strategy games
Alright, let’s talk about them free games, the kind you don’t gotta pay a dime for. You know, the ones where you take your turn, then the computer takes its turn. Like checkers, but… fancier, I guess.
They call ’em “turn-based strategy games.” Sounds mighty important, don’t it? But really, it just means you gotta think a bit before you make your move. Can’t just go clickin’ around like a crazy chicken.
Now, I hear tell there’s a whole bunch of these games out there. Some fella told me there’s, like, 43 free-to-play ones! Can you believe that? That’s more games than I got chickens, and I got a whole coop full!
Some of these games, they been around a long time. Like this “Freeciv” game. They say it started way back in 1996. That’s before my grandson was even born! Imagine that, a game older than my own grandbaby.
- Freeciv: Heard it’s like that Civilization game, but free. You build your own little world, from the ground up. Sounds like a lot of work to me, but folks seem to like it.
- Other Free Games: Then there’s all sorts of others. Ones with spaceships, ones with soldiers, ones with… well, I don’t rightly know what all they got. But there’s a lot, I tell ya. A whole heap of ’em. They say even some of them sports games like PES and that FIFA thing, they’re kinda like strategy games too. You gotta plan your moves and all that.
Now, where do you find these games? Well, some of ’em are on that “Steam” thing. My grandson talks about it all the time. Says there’s a few free ones there, but not as many as you might think. He says they have 4 free turn-based strategy games. Don’t really know what a “Steam” is, but it sounds like where the young folks get their games these days.

Then there’s this other place, “itch-i-o” or somethin’ like that. Sounds like somethin’ you’d scratch, but apparently, it’s full of games. Lots of ’em free, and lots of ’em with that “turn-based strategy” thing goin’ on. You can download ’em right onto your computer, or so they tell me.
What makes a good turn-based strategy game, you ask? Well, I reckon it’s gotta make you think. You can’t just rush in, guns blazing, you know? Gotta plan things out, like figuring out how to get the best price for your eggs at the market. It also helps if it is not too complicated. I don’t got time to learn a whole new language just to play a game.
Some of these games, they got all sorts of fancy stuff. Like “4X” games, they call ’em. That means you gotta “explore,” “expand,” “exploit,” and “exterminate.” Sounds kinda violent, if you ask me. But I guess that’s what the young folks like these days. These “4X” games, they got all sorts of things to manage, like science and money and talkin’ to other folks. Sounds complicated, but some folks like a challenge, I guess.
And a lot of these games are what they call “open source.” That means anyone can mess with the code, make it better, or add new stuff. Like a potluck, everyone brings somethin’ to the table. That’s how that freeciv game works.
And don’t forget them board games! Chess, checkers, that Go game… they’ve been around forever and they’re all turn-based. Simple, but they make you use your brain. Sometimes the old ways are the best.
So, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to do that don’t cost a dime and makes you think a bit, give these free turn-based strategy games a try. Might be just the thing to keep you busy on a rainy afternoon. Just don’t blame me if you get hooked! They can be addictive like a good cup of coffee on a cold morning.
Just remember: take your time, think ahead, and don’t be afraid to try somethin’ new. And most importantly, have fun! That’s what games are for, after all.
