cryo board game review
Alright, listen up, y’all. Gonna tell ya ’bout this here…uh… “Cryo” board game. Don’t know what that fancy name means, but it’s somethin’ ’bout a spaceship crashin’ and folks needin’ savin’. Sounds like a whole heap of trouble to me, but my grandkids, they love it. So, I sat down and watched ’em play, figured I’d tell ya what I saw.
First off, this game ain’t no checkers, that’s for sure. Got all sorts of bits and pieces. Little plastic fellers, cards with pictures, and a big ol’ board with spaces and stuff. My eyes ain’t what they used to be, but even I could see them pictures was mighty pretty. Real colorful, like them fancy magazines they sell at the store. They tell me it’s “stellar artwork” or some such. Whatever that means, it looks nice.
- Lots of little pieces. Be careful you don’t lose ’em!
- Pictures are real purdy.
- Board is big, takes up the whole table.
Now, the game itself, it’s kinda complicated. You gotta move your little fellers around, collectin’ things and fixin’ the spaceship, I guess. The kids, they were jabberin’ on ’bout “resources” and “workers” and buildin’ stuff. Sounded like a bunch of hooey to me, but they seemed to know what they was doin’. They was strategizin’ and plannin’ like they was fixin’ to build a real spaceship! They say it’s “strategic gameplay”, real fancy talk for thinkin’ hard, I reckon.
One thing I noticed, them kids were workin’ together, mostly. They was helpin’ each other out, sharin’ them “resources” and makin’ plans together. That’s good, I say. Teaches ’em to cooperate, instead of fightin’ all the time. It reminds me of them buildin’ forts out of blankets when they were younger. Now they’re usin’ cardboard.
But it ain’t all sunshine and roses. This game takes a long time to play. Them kids sat there for hours, movin’ them little fellers around. My old bones started achin’ just watchin’ ’em. And sometimes, they’d get frustrated. One of ’em couldn’t find the right card, or another one made a bad move, and they’d start squabblin’. Just like kids, I tell ya. But mostly they were havin’ fun.

I heard some folks sayin’ this game is real good quality. Well, I guess it is. Them pieces seem sturdy enough, ain’t gonna break easy. And the board, it’s thick and lays flat. So, I reckon it’ll last a while, even with them kids bangin’ it around. That’s important, ’cause these days, things ain’t made like they used to be. Too much cheap junk out there, if you ask me. I appreciate that the artwork is fancy, just like the magazines from the store.
Now, would I recommend this here “Cryo” game? Well, I dunno. If you like them complicated games that make you think hard, and you got a few hours to spare, then maybe. The kids, they seem to like it a lot. They say it’s “immersive,” which I guess means it sucks you in. They have played it several times, I’ve lost count. They even talk about playing it again, so I reckon it must be good for somethin’. But if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ simple and quick, like a game of cards, then this ain’t it. It’s a brain-burner, that’s for sure.
So, there you have it. My two cents on this here “Cryo” game. Take it or leave it. I’m just an old lady, what do I know? But I seen a thing or two in my time, and I know when kids are havin’ fun, even if I don’t understand all them fancy rules and whatnot.
I think it’s a good game but not good enough to keep. Them kids have too many games as it is and I need the space on the shelf. It was fun watching them learn how to play and watching them plan all their different strategies.
