best ww2 strategy games pc
Alright, alright, let’s talk about them war games, the ones on the computer, you know? The ones about that big war, World War… uh… Two, I think they call it. My grandkids, they play all sorts of things on them fancy boxes, but I like the ones about history, you know? Makes you think a bit, even if it’s all just make-believe.
So, I heard tell there’s this game, War Thunder. Sounds noisy, don’t it? They say it’s got all sorts of planes and tanks, even boats, from all them countries that fought in the war. And it’s free! Can’t beat free, I always say. My grandson, he says it’s like, not too hard, not too easy, just right in the middle. You can fly them planes, drive them tanks, shoot at folks… all pretend, of course. Don’t want no real fighting, we had enough of that back in the day, not that I saw any of it mind you, but my old man did.
Then there’s this other one, Steel Division 2. Sounds like something you’d use to build a barn, but it’s a game. Came out a few years back, they say. Fast-paced, my grandson tells me. That means it’s quick, I guess. Lots of action, like them old cowboy movies, but with tanks and soldiers instead of horses and gunslingers. Not really my cup of tea, all that rushing around, gives me a headache just thinking about it.
Now, there’s a whole bunch of them Call of Duty games. My grandson, he’s played them all, I reckon. There’s the first one, then United Offensive, then Call of Duty II, and even one called World at War. Lots of shooting, lots of running around. Seems like they all do pretty much the same thing, but he keeps buying them, so they must be doing something right. Kids these days, always wanting the newest thing. Back in my day, we had sticks and rocks, and we were happy with it.
- War Thunder: Free, lots of vehicles, not too hard, not too easy.
- Steel Division 2: Fast-paced action, came out in 2019.
- Call of Duty series: Lots of shooting, lots of games, popular with the young’uns.
And then there’s this game, World of Tanks. Sounds simple enough, right? Just tanks. But my grandson says it’s a big deal, lots of people play it. Free too, which is good. He says it’s all about tanks, different kinds of tanks, from different countries. You drive them around, shoot at other tanks, try to win. Sounds like a lot of banging and clanging to me, but he seems to like it. He’s always yelling about getting “penned” or “one-shot”, whatever that means.

There was this one game he told me about, sounded real complicated. Something about North Africa, I think. Said it takes like, 1,500 hours to play! Can you imagine? That’s more time than it takes to grow a whole field of corn! And you need ten people to play it! Sounds like a whole lot of fuss to me. They called it a “wargame,” real serious-like. Published way back in the 70s, even before your mother was born. Too much thinking for me, I prefer something a bit simpler.
And now they’re talking about Company of Heroes 3. My grandson says it’s the best one, the best World War Two game out there. He’s always saying things are “the best,” so I don’t always believe him, but he seems pretty excited about this one. Haven’t seen him play it yet, but I’m sure I will soon enough. He’ll be yelling at the screen, and I’ll be telling him to turn it down, same as always.
So, there you have it, a whole bunch of them war games. Some free, some not, some fast, some slow, some simple, some complicated enough to make your head spin. But they all about that big war, the one they call World War Two. Makes you think, all them young folks fighting, all that trouble. Makes you appreciate the quiet life, you know? Even if it’s just interrupted by the banging and clanging of them computer games.
But if you like history and tanks and planes, you might like them. And if you’re looking for the best? Well, that depends on who you ask. My grandson would say Company of Heroes 3. Me? I just like watching him play, even if I don’t understand half of it.
