turn based strategy games ios

Alright, so you wanna know about them turn-based strategy games on your phone, huh? Them things you play when you got some time to kill, like waiting for the bus or sittin’ on the toilet. I ain’t no expert, mind you, but I’ve seen my grandkids fiddlin’ with them things, so I kinda get the gist of it.

What are these turn-based thingamajigs anyway?

Well, from what I gather, it’s like playing chess, but on your phone. You take your turn, then the computer or some other fella takes theirs. It ain’t like them fast-paced shoot-’em-up games where everything’s happenin’ at once. You get to sit and think, plan your moves like you’re plannin’ what to plant in the garden next spring. It’s about strategy, see? Like figuring out where to put your soldiers or how to build your city. Some of ’em got cards, some got little army men, some got spaceships. It’s all the same, though, you take your turn, then they take theirs.

Best ones, you say? Well, that depends…

My grandson, that little whippersnapper, he’s always goin’ on about this “Tropico” game. Says you get to be a dictator on some island. Sounds like a whole lotta trouble to me, but he seems to like it. Bossin’ people around, buildin’ stuff. He says it’s one of the best, real deep and all. Then there’s this “Rome: Total War” one. He showed me pictures – looks like a whole bunch of fellas fightin’ with swords and shields. Kinda like them old movies they show on TV sometimes.

  • Some games my grandson plays:
    • Tropico – Bein’ a boss on an island.
    • ROME: Total War – Big battles with them Romans.
    • Rusted Warfare – Looks like tanks and robots, all modern-like.

He also plays some weird ones with robots and stuff. “Rusted Warfare” he calls it. I don’t get it, all them wires and metal. But he says it’s fun, buildin’ factories and sendin’ tanks to fight. Then there’s this “Into the Breach”. Giant monsters attacking cities, and you gotta use robots to stop them. Sounds stressful to me, but he says it’s real thinky, gotta plan everything just right.

He talks about some card games too. “Shadowverse” or somethin’. I seen him swipin’ them cards around, lookin’ all serious. Reminds me of them old ladies playin’ bridge at the church social. He says there’s a lot of strategy in it, building decks and all. He also play somethin’ called “Auto Chess”. It’s like chess, but with different characters and abilities. You place them on the board and they fight automatically. He says you gotta think ahead about how they’ll match up against the other team.

More grandkid talk: More games they like.

And then there are them ones that’s like those old computer games. Like that “XCOM 2” one, where you’re fightin’ aliens and stuff. Gotta be real careful with your soldiers, ’cause if they die, they stay dead. Sounds harsh, but he says it makes it more excitin’. And that “Civilization VI”, where you build an empire from the ground up. Gotta manage resources, research technology, and deal with other civilizations. That sounds like a whole lotta work to me, but he seems to enjoy it.

So, which one’s the best?

Honestly, I can’t tell ya. It’s like askin’ which pie is the best – apple, cherry, or pecan? Everyone likes somethin’ different. My grandson, he likes them war ones and them buildin’ ones. But your neighbor’s kid might like them card ones or them robot ones. It’s all a matter of taste, you see. The best thing to do is try a few and see which ones you like. Most of ’em are free to download, so you ain’t losin’ nothin’ but a little time. And time, well, that’s somethin’ we all got plenty of, ain’t we? Especially when you’re sittin’ on the toilet, waitin’ for the bus, or just plain bored.

Don’t forget the important stuff!

Just remember, don’t spend too much time starin’ at that little screen. Get outside, get some fresh air, talk to people. These games are fun and all, but they ain’t real life. Real life is out there, in the sunshine, with the birds singin’ and the flowers bloomin’. But if you gotta kill some time, well, them turn-based strategy games ain’t a bad way to do it. Just don’t let ‘em rot your brain, ya hear?

Final word, for what it’s worth…

So, go on, download a few, try ’em out. See if you like ’em. And if you don’t, well, there’s always solitaire. Or a good book. Or just starin’ out the window. Sometimes, that’s the best strategy of all.
