ace hardware trail game camera
Well now, let me tell ya somethin’ about these here trail cameras, the kind you stick out in the woods to see what critters are snoopin’ around. Folks call ’em game cameras too, I reckon. Seen a whole bunch of ’em at the hardware store the other day, Ace Hardware to be exact, and they got all sorts, from the real fancy ones to the ones that don’t cost an arm and a leg.
So, what’s the big deal with these cameras anyway? Well, if you’re like me and like to know what’s traipsin’ through your backyard or out in the woods, these things are a godsend. You stick ’em to a tree, turn ’em on, and they take pictures or videos when somethin’ moves. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
Now, some of these cameras, they’re real high-tech. I heard tell of some that send pictures right to your phone! Can you believe that? Imagine sittin’ on your porch sippin’ sweet tea and gettin’ a picture of a big ol’ buck walkin’ by, right there on your phone. That’s what they call “cellular” cameras, I think. They use somethin’ called “ATT” or some such, like them cell phones the young’uns are always glued to.
But then you got your simpler ones too. Like the ones that just take pictures and save ’em on a little card, a “SD card” they call it. You gotta go out there and get the card, bring it home, and stick it in your computer to see the pictures. Not as fancy, but they get the job done. And they don’t cost near as much, which is good for folks like me who gotta watch their pennies.
- Picture Quality: Some cameras take blurry pictures, some take clear ones. The ones that take clear ones cost more, naturally. They talk about “megapixels” and “HD video,” but all I care about is whether I can see if it’s a squirrel or a deer.
- Trigger Speed: This here is how fast the camera takes a picture after somethin’ moves. If it’s too slow, you might just get a picture of the critter’s tail. You want one that’s quick, like a blink of an eye, they say some are .4 seconds! That’s fast as a lighting strike!
- Night Vision: Most critters move around at night, so you need a camera that can see in the dark. They got these things called “LEDs” that light up the night, but the animals can’t see ’em. Pretty slick, if you ask me.
- Battery Life: Nothin’ worse than goin’ out to check your camera and findin’ out the batteries are dead. Some cameras use a lot of juice, some don’t. The ones that send pictures to your phone, they use up batteries faster, I reckon. So you better get yourself some good batteries, them AA ones seem to be the ticket.
Now, I saw this one camera, the Wildgame Innovations Terra Extreme 14MP, it was real cheap. But the fella at the store said it ain’t got many fancy features. You can only set the time and date, and choose between pictures or videos. But hey, if you just want a basic camera, that might be all you need. They got others too, Stealth Cam Deceptor, Moultrie Micro-42i… Lord, they got more names than Carter’s got liver pills.

Why do people use these cameras, you ask? Well, some folks use ’em for huntin’. They wanna see where the deer are, what time they come out, that sort of thing. Others use ’em just to watch the wildlife. It’s kinda fun to see what’s out there, even if it’s just a bunch of raccoons. And some folks, they use ’em to keep an eye on their property, make sure nobody’s sneakin’ around where they shouldn’t be.
One fella told me his camera wasn’t workin’ right. Said it weren’t takin’ no pictures. Well, there’s a whole heap of reasons for that. Batteries could be dead. Or maybe the signal is weak, if it’s one of them fancy cell phone cameras. Or maybe the SD card is full or somethin’. Sometimes it’s just something simple, you know? Like you forgot to turn it on! Happens to the best of us.
So, if you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ yourself a trail camera, head on down to Ace Hardware, or wherever they sell ’em, and take a look. They got all kinds, and I’m sure you can find one that fits your needs and your pocketbook. Just remember to read the instructions, or get one of them young’uns to help you set it up. And then you can sit back and enjoy seein’ all the critters that are roamin’ around your neck of the woods. Heck, you might even see somethin’ you ain’t never seen before!
