first video video game review

Well, now, let me tell ya ’bout the first video game I ever played. Back in the day, games weren’t like they are now. No fancy graphics or big ol’ screens, nope! It was real simple stuff. You’d see folks huddled ’round a machine, pokin’ at buttons or a joystick, and they’d get all excited when something happened on the screen. If I’m honest, I never did understand what they was so worked up about, but I reckon there was somethin’ to it, ’cause folks sure loved them games.

The very first video game ever, they say, came out somewhere between 1950 and 1958. It wasn’t no big thing like we got today, mind ya, just somethin’ they tinkered with in universities and big ol’ companies. They was usin’ these games to show off technology and all that. Ain’t like today when games are made for fun and entertainment. No, back then, they was more for showin’ off than for playin’. You didn’t see folks playin’ games in their homes or at arcades like we do now, not yet anyway.

Now, if you ask me, the real game that got the whole thing goin’ was Tennis For Two. That was the first game where you could hit something back and forth on a screen, just like tennis. Ain’t that somethin’? But it wasn’t until 1971, when a game called Computer Space came out, that folks started to get real serious ’bout these games. This one was the first commercial video game. You could actually pay to play it, just like those old slot machines. But I reckon most folks didn’t know what to make of it at first, ‘cause it was all so new and different.

Well, by the time Pong came out, everyone started to get excited. That was a simple game, real simple. You just moved a bar up and down to hit a ball back and forth. Folks loved it, and that got the ball rollin’ for more games. Soon after, we had stuff like Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and, my personal favorite, Donkey Kong. Those games were all the rage. But it wasn’t just about playin’ the game, no sir. Folks started to talk about ’em, too. They started to write reviews in magazines. And that’s when games started to get the attention they deserved.

Now, when we talk about game reviews, let me tell ya, it ain’t all sunshine and roses. I’ve read a fair few in my time, and some of ’em don’t pull no punches. Take The First Descendant, for example. Folks were real excited at first, thinkin’ it was gonna be a great shooter game with a bunch of loot. But when they got their hands on it, well, let’s just say it didn’t live up to the hype. The quests were boring, the story didn’t make no sense, and folks were left disappointed. It had the building blocks for a good game, but it got buried under too many bad decisions. A real shame, that one.

Then there’s a game like Elden Ring, which came out and blew everybody away. People couldn’t stop talkin’ ’bout it. Even the critics gave it a 96, and that’s not somethin’ you see every day! The graphics were beautiful, the world was huge, and the gameplay was tight. It was a real winner, folks, no doubt about it. But, y’know, no game’s perfect. Even Elden Ring had its flaws. Some folks said it was too hard, and I reckon they got a point. But for those who liked a challenge, it was just the thing.

And let’s not forget ’bout those old games like Battlezone by Atari. That was the first 3D game ever. The military even used it for training, can you believe that? And Defender came out around the same time. It was all about shootin’ and dodgin’ and blowin’ things up. Good ol’ fun, simple as that. And then came Pac-Man, and well, I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted how big that game would get. Even folks who didn’t play games knew Pac-Man.

Now, I reckon if you’re gonna talk about the first video games, you gotta mention all them classic arcade games. They may not have been the most complicated, but they sure did get a lot of folks hooked. I remember folks would spend hours just throwin’ their quarters into those machines, tryin’ to get a high score. You couldn’t stop ’em! And those games, they paved the way for all the fancy stuff we got today. Without them ol’ arcade games, I reckon we wouldn’t have the big ol’ video game industry we got now.

As for the games today, they’re sure different. You got games with big ol’ stories and beautiful graphics. You got online games where you can play with folks from all over the world. It’s a whole new world out there now, no doubt about it. But I tell ya, there’s somethin’ special about those old games. They were simple, but they had a way of pullin’ ya in. And sometimes, that’s all you need for a good time.

So, if you ever get the chance, go back and try one of those old games. You might be surprised at how much fun you have, even without all the fancy stuff we got today. Who knows? You might just find yourself hooked on somethin’ simple and good.
